Woyzeck Game premiered at the very city cetre of Helsinki, at the Railway Square (also the most violent place in Helsinki). On the right there's the wagon where the Gamer's Room is situated, on the middle the tent where's the stage and auditorium for audience. In public space the performance happens in a big market place tent (8x4m). The performance can also be set up in a convetional theatre space without the tent. The participating player is being given instructions before the game. The audience follows the player's view, choices and storyline through two screens, one of which showing the text adventure, other presenting characters point of view thru head-set-camera. The player exiting the Gamer's Room after the game in the premiere. The player was critic of Helsingin Sanomat the biggest newspaper in Finland, the game-character/performer was Lauri Antti Mattila, who is also the director of the performance. The performing body and body language are born in the interplay between the player and the performer. The tent for performances for public spaces has big windows which allow the performance to interact with the passersby. A view from the Gamer's Room after the performance. The player had a connection to the stage through remote-controlled-human technique with the performer wearing headphones and a camera and the player having a video screen and a mic. In Helsinki performances there was a peer support group for people living under precarious conditions gathering every evening after the performance with different quests around pea soup. After the premiere we had researcher Sari Näre giving us a speech about the violence in Finnish employment policy. All photos by Yoshi Omori. Here’s a small excerpt how the performance appears in a black box space. (Recorded at Teatteri Telakka, Tampere, in February 2023)
